Diet soft drinks may have minimal calories, but they can still have a major impact on your waistline, according to two studies presented at a meeting of the American Diabetes Association in San Diego.

Researchers at the Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio tracked 474 people, all 65 to 74 years old, for nearly a decade, measuring the subjects’ height, weight, waist circumference, and diet soft drink intake every 3.6 years. The waists of those who drank diet soft drinks grew 70 percent more than those who avoided the artificially sweetened stuff; people who drank two or more servings a day had waist-circumference increases that were five times larger than non-diet-soda consumers.

The findings are in line with those of a 2005 study, also conducted by researchers at the Texas Health Science Center, in which the chance of becoming overweight or obese increased with every diet soda consumed.

“On average, for each diet soft drink our participants drank per day, they were 65 percent more likely to become overweight during the next seven to eight years, and 41 percent more likely to become obese,” said Sharon Fowler, who was a faculty associate in the division of clinical epidemiology in the Health Science Center’s department of medicine at the time.

But how does something with no calories cause weight gain? Turns out that even if our taste buds can’t tell the difference between real and fake sugar, our brains can. Another study, also presented at the American Diabetes Association meeting on Sunday, found that after three months of eating food laced with aspartame (which is also found in many diet soft drinks), mice had higher blood sugar levels than rodents who ate regular food. According to Fowler, who worked on all three studies and is now a researcher at UT Health Science Center at San Diego, the aspartame could trigger the appetite but do nothing to satisfy it. That could interfere with your body’s ability to tell when you’re full—and could lead you to eat more in general.

It happens in humans, too. A 2008 study found that women who drank water sweetened with sugar and water sweetened with Splenda couldn’t taste a difference, but functional MRI scans showed that their brains’ reward center responded to real sugar “more completely” than it did to the artificial sweetener.

“Your senses tell you there’s something sweet that you’re tasting, but your brain tells you, ‘actually, it’s not as much of a reward as I expected,’” Dr. Martin P. Paulus, a professor of psychiatry at the University of California San Diego and one of the authors of the study, told the Huffington Post. So you chase that no-calorie soda with something more caloric, like a salty snack. The sweet taste could also trigger your body to produce insulin, which blocks your ability to burn fat.

Aside from the health problems that go along with a widening waistline, diet soft drinks have also been linked to an increase in diabetes, heart attack, and stroke. One study of more than 2,500 people found that those “who drank diet soda daily had a 61 percent increased risk of cardiovascular events compared to those who drank no soda, even when accounting for smoking, physical activity, alcohol consumption and calories consumed per day,” ABC News reported in February. And a 2008 University of Minnesota study of nearly 10,000 adults ages 45 to 64 found that drinking a single can of diet soda a day led to a 34 percent higher risk of developing metabolic syndrome, a collection of health problems that includes high blood sugar, high cholesterol, and high levels of belly fat.

“Drinking a reasonable amount of diet soda a day, such as a can or two, isn’t likely to hurt you,” writes Katherine Zeratsky, a nutritionist at the Mayo Clinic. “The artificial sweeteners and other chemicals currently used in diet soda are safe for most people, and there’s no credible evidence that these ingredients cause cancer.”

“Some types of diet soda are even fortified with vitamins and minerals,” she added. “But diet soda isn’t a health drink or a silver bullet for weight loss.”

The best healing remedies also taste fabulous (I can’t say that about any prescription medications). Plus, foods won’t cause the nasty common side effects that most drugs cause.

1. Cherries
Muraleedharan Nair, PhD, professor of natural products and chemistry at Michigan State University, found that tart cherry extract is ten times more effective than aspirin at relieving inflammation. Only two tablespoons of the concentrated juice need to be taken daily for effective results. Sweet cherries have also been found to be effective.

2. Blackberries 3. Raspberries 4. Blueberries and 5. Strawberries
Dr. Nair later found the same anti-pain compound in berries like blackberries, raspberries, blueberries and strawberries

6. Celery and Celery Seeds
James Duke, Ph.D., author of The Green Pharmacy, found more than 20 anti-inflammatory compounds in celery and celery seeds, including a substance called apigenin, which is powerful in its anti-inflammatory action. Add celery seeds to soups, stews or as a salt substitute in many recipes.

7. Ginger
Ginger reduces pain-causing prostaglandin levels in the body and has been widely used in India to treat pain and inflammation. A study by Indian researchers found that when people who were suffering from muscular pain were given ginger, they all experienced improvement. The recommended dosage of ginger is between 500 and 1,000 milligrams per day. If you’re taking medications, check with your health practitioner for possible herb-drug interactions.

8. Turmeric
Turmeric (curcuma longa) is the yellow spice commonly used in Indian curries. In research it has been shown to be a more effective anti-inflammatory than steroid medications when dealing with acute inflammation. Its main therapeutic ingredient is curcumin. Research shows that curcumin suppresses pain through a similar mechanism as drugs like COX-1 and COX-2 inhibitors (without the harmful side effects). Choose a standardized extract with 1500 mg of curcumin content per day.

9. Salmon 10. Mackerel and 11. Herring
Many fatty fish like salmon, mackerel and herring also contain these valuable oils. Omega-3s convert in the body into hormone-like substances that decrease inflammation and pain. According to Dr. Alfred D. Steinberg, an arthritis expert at the National Institute of Health, fish oil is an anti-inflammatory agent. Fish oil acts directly on the immune system by suppressing 40 to 55 percent of the release of cytokines, compounds known to destroy joints. Many other studies also demonstrate that eating moderate amounts of fish or taking fish oil reduces pain and inflammation, particularly for arthritis sufferers.

12. Flax Seeds and Flax Oil
Freshly-ground flax seeds and cold-pressed flax oil, contain plentiful amounts of fatty acids known as Omega-3s. Do not cook with flax oil otherwise it will have the opposite effect-irritating the body’s tissues and causing pain.

13. Raw Walnuts and Walnut Oil
Raw walnuts and walnut oil also contain the same powerful Omega-3 fatty acids that fight pain and inflammation in the body.

When it comes to pain, food really is the best medicine.

Some people take care their hair condition with anything’s. The simple ways in preserving hair health are shampoo and using the right kind of hairbrush. Using shampoo and conditioner properly can help improve your hair’s health and condition also prevent you from hair losses. To maintain good hair growth you need good circulation to your scalp so use hairbrush for make a good circulation of your scalp. Don’t forget in keeping the hairbrush clean if you want to have beautiful hair.

Using shampoo and conditioner

Using shampoo and conditioner properly can help improve your hair’s health and condition. For the first, consider what kind of shampoo and conditioner you want to use. There are lots of shampoo and conditioner, and each one claims to make your hair healthy and better. To pick the right shampoo and conditioner combination, you have to choose at least four to try first.

There are about four kinds of shampoos, but most of them are a combination of two or more types. For example, there are shampoos with sulfates that claim to be “natural” and are only for people with colored hair. There are shampoos that have no sulfates, claim to be “organic”, and are only for people with dry or damaged hair. Try to pick the four best products that sound good to you, and then judge them by how your hair feels after you tried that shampoos. Does your hair feel too dry or brittle? Is there a change in texture, good or bad? Is there excessive hair fall? How does your scalp feel (tingly, nothing etc.)?

Sometimes, using a shampoo and conditioner the right way can make your answers to these questions more on the positive side. Here’s how you can shampoo and condition your hair effectively:

First, make sure that your scalp and hair are completely wet. This means drenched. Make sure that you are using cold water, so that your hair does not become dry or brittle.

Put only a quarter-size of shampoo onto your palm. Place the shampoo onto the back of your neck. Using the pads of your fingers, massage the shampoo and gradually move the suds up to the rest of your head.

Massage your hair for at least two minutes. This will ensure that you are getting rid of dead skin cells.

Using cold water, wash the shampoo out completely. Once you are sure that your hair is squeaky clean, use about three quarter-sized dollops of conditioner and place only on the tips of your hair. Leave the conditioner on for at least five minutes. Wash it for only thirty seconds.

By making sure that you do not put conditioner on your roots, you are helping to decrease your chances of developing dandruff.

Hopefully, these tips will teach you how to use your shampoo and conditioner more effectively, so that you can use them to help you attain healthy hair.

Brushing Your Hair

To maintain good hair growth you need good circulation to your scalp. You need also need a clean scalp with little oil and dirt accumulating in your hair follicles. The boar hairbrush helps you achieve this when you regularly brush your hair.

Brush your hair when it is dry. This prevents breaking of your hair. When you brush, the gentle pulling of your hair stimulates your scalp bringing in more blood to feed your hair. Also the slight pulling stimulates the release of oil from your follicles, which lubricates your hair.

Brush your hair with a boar bristle hairbrush twice a day for the best hair care in the morning and night. For short hair brush for three minutes and for long hair brush five minutes.

By bending your head to the floor, when brushing, you will increase the blood circulation to your scalp. Now, brush from your neck forward to the front of your scalp, then, from sides to your crown. Lastly, brush from the front of your scalp to the neck.

Cleaning Your Boar Hair Brush

If possible, you should clean your brush every day. If you have two or more hair brushes then it will be easier to do this. Your boar bristle hairbrush accumulates dirt and oils from hair when you brush. Without regular cleaning of your hairbrush, this dirt and oil will redeposit onto your hair. Over time this added dirt and oil will plug up your hair follicles and lead to hair thinning or permanent hair loss.

You can clean your brush every day when you shower. Clean it with shampoo and scrub the bristles with your hand back and forth. After cleaning, you can dry the brush with a towel and let it sit until the next day. By the next day, it is ready to use and your other brush is ready to be cleaned.

So, using a natural hairbrush like the boar bristle hair brush is the best way to care for your hair. Gentle daily brushing stimulates your scalp and keeps you hair healthy. But don’ forget to keep your hair brush clean, since your don’t want to put the dirt and oil on your brush back onto your scalp.

If you think the surgery is a cure-all, think again. The crazy thing is some people are gaining more weight on purpose so they can qualify to even be considered for the surgery. How sick is that?

My aunt had gastric bypass surgery last year. She was so excited about the new body she was going to have after the surgery. She just couldn’t wait for her new life to begin. This was an answer to her prayers. So she thought!

Up until then, my aunt had not exercised a day in her life. She never followed a sensible eating plan, nor did she want to. By the looks of them, none of my family had ever sacrificed anything in the way of food. The doctors had filled her head with “results” that were only possible, not even probable. Her children were totally delusional about their mom’s weight and had danced around the issue so much that my aunt was in total denial. And guess what? True to form, she gained the weight back in eight months. Why?

The answer: you can’t build a house on a foundation made of sand. If you don’t deal with what is underneath the surface of your emotional behavior toward eating and exercise, you will go right back to the beginning, no matter what you take out or do to your body. Surgery or no surgery, there is no cure-all for being overweight. However, there is a solution — do you want to hear it? Here it is:

Decide how you are motivated.

Determine your underlying reasons for your eating and exercise behaviors or lack thereof.

Develop the best support system to promote your own personal success.

Deal with the emotions behind your eating patterns.

Dedicate yourself to an exercise program.

Maybe the surgery works in the short run. And maybe that will buy you some time and give you some inspiration to start exercising and eating better. However, surgery is not a means to an end! It doesn’t change your head; it only changes your stomach. If you do decide to have the surgery, please understand that without deep changes in your thought process and exercise habits, the gastric bypass surgery “results” will not stick.

And the drop in low-density lipoprotein, or LDL cholesterol, was big enough that dietary changes could be an alternative to statin medications for many people, they said.

“There’s no question that statins have made a major difference in terms of cardiovascular disease control,” said study author Dr. David Jenkins, from the University of Toronto. But at least for now, he added, “we can only get so far with statins.”

One in four adults age 45 and older in the U.S. takes the cholesterol-lowering drugs.

Jenkins and his colleagues wanted to see how big an effect a diet based on the pillars of lower cholesterol could have on LDL numbers without statins.

They randomly split 351 Canadians with high cholesterol into three groups. One group got nutrition counseling promoting a low-saturated-fat diet for six months.

In the other two groups, dietitians helped participants fit more cholesterol-lowering foods, including soy milk, tofu, nuts, oats, peas and beans, into a healthy diet — meeting with some of them twice during the study, and with others seven times. All the diets were vegetarian.

After six months, people on the low-saturated-fat diet saw a drop in LDL cholesterol of 8 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL), on average, according to findings in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

That compared to 24 mg/dL and 26 mg/dL decreases in participants on the cholesterol-lowering diets. (The average starting LDL was about 170 mg/dL. A number 160 mg/dL and above is considered high.)

That drop is “really a lot,” said Dr. Yunsheng Ma, a nutrition and heart disease researcher from the University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester, who was not involved in the new study.

Volunteers in the cholesterol-lowering group were encouraged to consume about a gram of plant sterols in an enriched margarine per 1,000 calories of food they ate, as well as about 10 grams of fiber in the form of oats, barley and psyllium, 22.5 grams of soy protein and 22.5 grams of nuts, per 1,000 calories.

“A lot of people rely on the medication, but diet is really powerful actually,” he told Reuters Health. “People ignore that. They think if they’re on statins, they can do anything they want, they can eat the high-fat foods because the statins are going to take care of that.”

One in five of the participants dropped out before the full six months, and even those that didn’t had a hard time sticking closely to the diet plans — but many still saw cholesterol benefits.

The researchers had everyone in the study who was taking statins go off the medication for the diet intervention. Jenkins said the question of how diet and statins could lower LDL in tandem is for future research.

But for those who like the idea of changing their diet instead of going on medications, this is a reasonable option, he said. Others who aren’t interested in adjusting their eating habits might be better suited to sticking with statins, Jenkins added.

“If you want to sit on the couch with the six pack and the wings and watch other people exercise and you’re quite determined not to do anything other than that, then we’ve got a medication for you,” he said.

Jenkins said that doctors should encourage their patients with high cholesterol to try diet changes, if they’re interested. A couple of visits to a nutritionist might be enough for motivated patients to make the switch to a plant-based, higher-fiber diet, he added.

“The diet only is enough for the majority of the people that have a not-so-good lifestyle,” Sabate, who was not involved in the new research, told Reuters Health. “By changing the diet and their lifestyle they can establish good control of their cholesterol.”

The cost benefits of cooking at home far outweigh the money you’ll save by cutting processed and takeout foods from your family’s diet. We surveyed a major East Coast metropolitan grocery chain to determine these prices. Costs will vary according to where you live, but this list represents foods that traditionally offer great health value while being kind to your wallet.

Protein

Wild Salmon: $2.89 for 14.75 ounces (59 cents per serving)-Get your omega-3s for less. Salmon is full of these healthy fats, which help lower cholesterol and prevent heart attacks.

The real problem is that dieting never has and never will be easy to do correctly, which is something that must be understood and appreciated by all approaching weight loss long in advance of beginning their endeavour. With this in mind, the following is a brief rundown of ten common-sense tips for weight loss which are not only realistic, but also proven effective and comprehensively safe:

Water– Drinking vast quantities of water while dieting offers a myriad of positives, which makes it all the more surprising that such is a habit that very few dieters practice to the necessary degree. Water is exceptionally good for the body, aids digestion and offers the best form of natural appetite control by giving a full feeling for longer. What could be more simple than drinking a glass of water before and after every meal to help boost the satisfaction enormously?

Busy– Boredom can be nothing less than the Antichrist of the dieter, leading to increased and excessive eating simply as a way of passing the time. In short, those who are too busy to think about food and eating will naturally eat far less than those with nothing to do.

Think – Consider each and every item eaten and assess firstly whether or not it is a good idea for the diet, along with if there is a possible healthier alternative. This may appear binding but becomes surprisingly easy over time.

Time– Never expect to lose abundant weight healthily in a short period of time. This is one of the most detrimental habits of all, with so many giving no more than a few weeks and then quitting altogether as motivation is destroyed. Be realistic and allow as long as it takes.

Supplies– Cram fridges, freezers and cupboards full of only the foods that are suitable for the eating plan chosen. Choose as many quick and easy healthy snack-esque foods as possible to avoid the perils of unhealthy fast foods when in a hurry. In short, if the poor choices are made unavailable, the healthy route becomes the only option.

Plan– Eating on the fly is a sure fire way of slipping up, so plan as many meals as possible in advance. If possible, it is a good idea to know what will be eaten for dinner before breakfast is ever through.

Frequency– Eating little and often rather that infrequently in large quantities is well known to be a far healthier approach, regardless of the fact that very few actually practice the method themselves. Tough to begin indeed but simple once picked up.

Results – Many diets advise not to use scales and measuring devices so as to avoid problems with motivation, but the simple fact of the matter is that most people have to see results first hand to believe something is working. As such, balance is the key as hourly or daily weighing is never a good idea, though weekly or monthly could prove beneficial.

Persistence– Beginning a diet or healthy eating regime is simple – staying on one for a long period of time is not. The body has to get used to a new intake and will undoubtedly throw up complications and even mood problems in the interim, but rest assured that all will eventually pass as the new approach becomes the norm.

Exercise – The obvious and oft-maligned finale, exercise is essential not only to burn the calories, but maintain a health metabolism and stave off boredom which, as mentioned earlier, can see any diet come crashing down.
